Who controls your mind?

You do. Period. Full stop.

The noisy environment in which we live is rife with fast-changing images, headlines, emojis, you-name-it. If you want peace, serenity or sanity, stop giving this your attention.

YOU choose what to engage. Always have, always will. You can blame others who lure you into content with click-bait, but that’s a fool’s game.

Bait exists for a reason—to get you to do or say something you wouldn’t have, had you given it a moment’s thought. And to profit from your impulsivity.

It’s trendy to seek zen. Feng shui had its moment. Mindfulness is a beautiful sentiment, but tough for many to embrace. Your better angel hovers just outside your daily reach.

Well-intentioned gurus stand ready to invite you to learn of their proven methods for success, happiness or peace. Ironically, many of them disagree with one another. Which leaves you chasing the next best guarantee.

Quit excusing your flightiness. Take a moment to consider what it is you are doing, what you are experiencing as a result, and what you would rather experience instead.

You will not automatically know what to do to be and feel better, but unless you carve out time to develop even a fuzzy notion of what it might be, you will continue to be swept into the abyss.

Stop the madness. Just for an instant. Now.

Take time to appreciate what the pause button feels like. Endure the silence. Let the jitters of stillness course through your being. In the aftermath, you will have a different idea. Not clear, I’m sure. But an inkling. A promise. Pay attention.

Allow yourself to be intrigued by this. Practice shutting out noise. Take a nano-second or two each day to clear your mind and listen to your private thoughts. Keep track of them. I’m willing to bet they’ll sound more interesting than any media to which you may have grown addicted. I know with certainty they will lead you to a stronger, healthier place. Invest in the discipline. Embrace the adventure. Experience the freedom.

Here’s wishing you a New Year filled with possibility, peace and prosperity.
