It sounds caring. Supportive. Kind.
In my estimation it is insidiously the opposite.
Needing a safe space suggests that we cannot handle life as it comes. That the evils of reality are simply too much. That there are people so perverse, so egotistically myopic, and so callous to the suffering of others that we need shelter from them. Undoubtedly, on any given day it can feel that way.
They are not.
For all the warnings we have heard over endless generations, people have still found ways to persevere. To stay focused on goodness, strength, and success that, despite long odds, they have realized. Despite demons, dreams do come true.
This is where our energy needs to be directed. This is where hope lies. This is where our future, singular and collective, is assured. You don’t need to be kept safe. You need to be encouraged, believed in, supported in overcoming hardship and disappointment.
You are the miracle that will inspire your peers and future generations. Make that your preoccupation. In it you will find joy, dignity, and kindness.
